| While
general job knowledge is important, effective supervisory
performance requires that candidates also be able to apply
that knowledge effectively. In addition, candidates must possess
a variety of job-related skills and abilities, such as verbal
communication skills and the ability to work under pressure,
that are difficult to measure through a written exam. Stanard
& Associates provides services which include the development
of structured oral interview, or oral board questions and
work sample exercises.
The traditional
job interview is fraught with problems, ranging from inappropriate
or illegal questions to inconsistencies in the evaluation
of responses. Worse yet, some candidates are asked totally
different questions. Structured interviews have been shown
to raise levels of validity beyond those achieved through
traditional, open-ended interview processes.
We incorporate
essential, but often overlooked elements of structure into
the interview process, putting all candidates on a level playing
field. The candidate is asked to respond to questions in the
presence of a panel of interviewers, typically composed of
members from the Civil Service Commission, the City's Human
Resources Department and executives from other public safety
agencies and/or the community. Stanard & Associates and
department personnel familiar with the job in question choose
questions and evaluation guidelines to score candidates' answers.
The panel of raters is then trained on how to administer the
interview process and consistently evaluate responses.
Stanard
& Associates has developed numerous oral board programs,
both for entry-level and promotional candidate selection processes.
For entry-level interview processes, department personnel
choose from Stanard & Associates' bank of interview questions;
for promotional interview processes, we work with each department
to create questions unique to local conditions.
