Similar to the structured interview, participants in assessment center exercises are rated by a panel formally trained in the rating process. In contrast to the interview process, the candidate actually participates in a series of work-related exercises. In other words, a candidate "works" in the new position for a couple of hours, handling tasks and responsibilities a person at that level normally encounters. Candidates are video-taped and their performance reviewed by the assessors selected and trained for this purpose. These assessors are true job experts, such as Police/Fire Chiefs, Commanders or Lieutenants from other agencies.
