| Internet/Intranet
surveys are a popular method of conducting surveys nowadays.
The main advantages to internet surveys are that print costs
are reduced, administration time is compressed and changes
to survey content are simple to make.
Respondents
simply access the online survey at Stanard’s web site. First
they will find a greeting or cover letter from top management
emphasizing the importance and objectives of the survey. Then,
they click on a button that brings them to the actual survey.
Respondents enter a unique ID number (such a unique pin number
or an e-mail address) and complete the survey. Upon completion,
they are provided with visual confirmation that their survey
responses have been accepted. In some instances, they may
be directed to a page with a statement from top management
thanking them for participating in the survey.
Although
Internet/Intranet surveys are very popular, they have their
drawbacks. The primary disadvantage is that there can be a
perception that the confidentiality/anonymity of employee
responses is compromised. If the survey is to be truly anonymous,
respondents should be able to take the survey without providing
a unique pin number. The unique pin number may not provide
a sense of anonymity to the respondent. On the other hand,
not identifying respondents can theoretically result in an
employee taking the survey multiple times, thereby compromising
the accuracy of the results. Stanard's proven methodologies
can minimize the confidentiality/anonymity problem.
For those
organizations wishing to conduct an Internet survey but also
wanting to maintain control of who is providing responses,
Stanard can ensure respondents have unique ID numbers. Social
security numbers or e-mail addresses are a viable options.
Otherwise, Stanard can create a random, non-sequential ID
number for each respondent and provide those numbers to employees
prior to the survey. Additionally, Stanard can set up the
survey such that each user cannot use the same computer twice
to take a survey. This can be achieved through the use of
"cookies." Stanard's experienced project managers can help
you determine the best possible approach.
